DID YOU KNOW?! Did you know that baby's hands and feet can stay blue/purple-ish in color for days after birth?
When a baby is first born, the skin is a dark red to purple color. As the baby starts to breathe air, the color changes to red. This redness normally starts to fade in the first day. A baby's hands and feet may stay bluish in color for several days. This is a normal response to a baby's underdeveloped blood circulation. But blue coloring of other parts of the body isn't normal. A lot of parents don't know what to expect in terms of little things like "what color will my baby's hands and feet be after birth?" haha... I mean, it's not something I thought about for sure. But this is a question I hear asked at (almost) every birth I document.
The nurses, midwives, and doulas, I am privileged enough to work with, always answer parent's as if the first time they've been asked. They answer with patience, reassurance and happiness.
Baby's circulatory system is prioritizing to all of baby's major organs, hands will pink up soon. I love to document every detail I can, this day can be a blur and little things like "purple" hands and feet are often not the important things we remember.
What's something new YOU learned from your baby's birth?
