This is probably one of the biggest “Instagram vs Reality” moments I’ve ever experienced. This temple is one of the hot spots in Bali for people to come take a picture, and it’s no real wonder why. There’s actually a gigantic volcano behind those clouds which makes for an even crazier backdrop.
I had heard how insane it was here- people waiting for 6+ hours to take a photo, so I had no intention of visiting, but it turns out this temple was only a 40 minute drive from the bungalow I was staying in for a month. One morning when my sinuses decided I needed a break from diving, my friend Ade took me up the mountain on the back of his moped so I could see Indonesia’s most instagramable sunrise. ✨
It takes 3-4 hours to get to the temple from most of the tourist hotspots, so when we got there, there were only a few other people that had arrived. I grabbed my sarong, checked out the view, snapped a couple quick pics, then walked up to the second temple.
It ended up being a longer walk than I expected, but I was still surprised that I was the only person there. The view wasn’t as dramatic as the first temple, but it was equally beautiful and incredibly peaceful.
About an hour and a half past sunrise, I made it back down the mountain, and by the time I got to the first temple at least 100 people were already waiting in line with more pouring in. It was honestly insane and I hear it only gets worse as the day goes on. It is literally my job to be active on social media and bring you guys value through my posts, so I understand wanting to grab an epic picture, but I don’t think there is a backdrop in the world that I’d be willing to wait in a line like that for.🤷♀️
