“The shorter you sleep; the shorter your life.”⠀⠀ The quote comes from Professor Matthew Walker, author of the book Why We Sleep.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ I’m quick to point out that 8 hours truly is the sweet spot for sleep, but let’s look at some interesting facts.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Your immune cells require sleep to function properly⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ We know your immune system works at night to clean up and repair damage that’s occurred during the day, not to mention killing cancer cells, infections and the like. You’ve experienced having a bad cold or flu and all you want to do is sleep.⠀ ⠀ ⠀ That’s because your immune system is active when you’re at rest. When you’re fighting an infection that overwhelming fatigue is a protective mechanism to allow your immune cells to clean up the infection.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Why would we then be surprised to learn that cutting sleep short would compromise our immune system? We shouldn’t be.

Stuck at home lately and unsure what to do? 🤔It's important during these times to step outside to get a breath of fresh air. Social distancing is very important, but so is sunlight. It only takes 5-15mins of sunlight a few times a week for you to gain a natural source of vitamin D. ☀️

Now that essential social distancing/home isolation needs have replaced all the practices, games, rehearsals, performances, tournaments, and competitions, what can young athletes do? First of all, follow those social distancing and home isolation orders and ensure your families and friends follow them also. This isn’t the time for get-togethers, group hikes, or in-person group practices. This is the time to protect the lives of vulnerable people and healthcare providers. So, if I am giving some professional recommendations for young dancers and performers, I’m going with the following (pay special attention to 7-9). 1️⃣ Maintain appropriate social distancing. 2️⃣ Rest. Or better yet, relative rest. 3️⃣ If you do a lot of repetitive motion (throw/jump) take some time away. 4️⃣ Worried about losing conditioning, technique, timing and precision? Realize that without coordinating with other teammates, close-up coaching, and proper surfaces, it is hard to maintain high-level skills. 5️⃣ If you have connections to on-line programs, enjoy the benefits of social interaction. Work on general strength and conditioning work. In fact, this might be a good time to schedule that injury/concussion follow-up that you didn’t have time to do. Many of these appointments can be done with telemedicine. 6️⃣ Please do use common sense when exercising at home. For example, leaps and jump combinations on the kitchen tile floor may put stress on your legs. Some coaches and instructors are cautious about assigning specific or too intense of exercise programs due to lack of supervision. 7️⃣ I’m going to challenge you 1look at things differently, especially if you see yourself as a single activity athlete. Make a goal of not just trying to be a better player or dancer, but a better overall athlete. 8️⃣Here’s my 2ndchallenge – find something totally new (or something you haven’t done in a long time) and just do it! Go on a hike (social distance alert again), play board games, do FREE PLAY! Productivity is capitalism-based shame, IMO. Let us FIGHT that shame! Przeżyjmy swoje życie dla siebie będąc prawdziwym i szczerym samym ze sobą. Nie róbmy czegoś ,, bo ktoś” tylko to co MY chcemy, na czym nam zależy. Ps. The surgeon said to keep the leg elevated most of the day for the next two weeks. Does this count? 😏 But seriously, this has been on my mind for a long time (42 days, 12 hours, and 15 minus...). I love handstands and training but was so scared to do anything that could prolong the recovery or screw up the leg even further. Just last night I woke up just about every hour with little pains and aches in the leg. I’m thinking they’re recovery pains so I let them go. I’ve been waiting until my leg felt strong enough to hold itself up before thinking about attempting this. Training hard also means training smart.🧠 💪 You have to listen to the body and never push it past what it’s not ready for. In training, there are two principles for success “Overloading” and “Overtraining.” The first leads to progress. here’s a video of me being a lazy sack of purple shit :D okay no but to be real, i needed this so bad. and it actually ended up being one of the best decisions i’ve made recently to just let myself veg tf out for a while. y’all, i just sat around playing with dumb snapchat filters and was straight nerding out playing kh3 and jamming to loud bass music for hours and literally did nothing productive the entire day. what prompted this potato sesh? well tbh, i started losing my shit. my capricorn ass was stressing out about all the things i felt like i needed to do while having all this free time. oh the irony of stressing out about needing to rest and take time for myself. despite doing my best to care for myself - eating healthy, doing my daily meditation practice, staying hydrated and active, etc - i started getting so irritated by little things, feeling anxious and manic, finding myself incapable of getting things done effectively because i was trying to force myself to do stuff when i really just needed to chill tf out for a little bit. so, that’s what i did. i gave myself two days to just chill, having nothing whatsoever on my to do list and zero judgment towards myself for whatever i chose to do spend my time doing. and to be real, it was one of the best things i’ve done for myself recently. right up there with going to a 10-day vipassana meditation course and starting a bunch of seeds for the garden. like it turned my whole week around and everything started to flow so much better. it’s not that i didn’t leave the couch/my bed for two whole days - i actually ended up doing quite a bit of work on garden stuff, cleaning, dishes, cooking, etc - i just didn’t do any of these things because i felt like i needed to - only because i genuinely wanted to. i may tell myself that my worth is not measured by my productivity, but actually embodying this principle is something i’m still learning. so for those of you that are struggling with how to rest/care for yourself - you’re not alone. give yourself a day (or two) and make feeding your joy you’re entire job. and lmk what happens 💜   #selfcare     #capricornproblems     #quarentine     #rest     #pleasureactivism     #gamergirl
