Photo by   @renan_ozturk   | The best time to experience or photograph these otherworldly desert playgrounds is often at night. The moonscape pictured here is dominated by the approximately 600-foot-tall (180-meter-tall) Kingfisher Tower just outside of Moab, Utah. See   @renan_ozturk   for more desertscapes and adventures in these regions.

Photo by   @paoloverzone   | I’ve always been interested in Russian society and history. Every time I’m in St. Petersburg I take some time to wander around the Winter Palace, a key monument in Russian and world history. The baroque-style palace is the former residence of the Russian tsars. Today, it’s the main part of the State Hermitage Museum complex. Facing the Neva River, the palace has more than a thousand rooms, each one filled with history. Photo by   @amandamustard   | Along the western edge of the Gulf of Thailand, hundreds of salt fields glisten in the sun. In the Samut Sakhon Province—the region's largest manufacturer of salt—seawater is pumped across the flat fields at the end of the wet season and left through the dry season. Around April, seasonal workers come out in droves to harvest the salt, first raking it into piles, then scooping them into baskets, and, finally, carrying them off to be bagged.

Photo by   @DaisyGilardini   | Wapusk National Park in northern Manitoba is the southernmost denning area for polar bears. In this particular episode a mother was resting with her two young cubs in a day den on her way to the pack ice to hunt. Day dens tend to be in wind-protected areas, where snowdrifts and trees form a natural shelter. She stayed there for several hours before she suddenly decided it was time to leave. She flopped downhill in deep snow, and one of her two cubs decided it was more convenient to hitch a ride on mama’s behind. The cub jumped up and held on with a firm bite to mama’s furry backside—a charming and totally unexpected behavior. Wildlife photography is all about patience and perseverance. Despite the challenging conditions and long hours waiting for something to happen, the experience of witnessing something so rare is beyond price. Photo by   @andrea_frazzetta   | The best time to climb Stromboli is in the evening, at sunset. During the day it's too hot. The climb lasts for about four hours. At the beginning you proceed slowly, but in the end, when you are almost at the top, you have to climb, exhausted. By nightfall everything around you becomes dark. The steps are slow. And the Earth, made of lava beneath your feet, is a metallic mirror that reflects the light of the moon. In this picture a group of tourists is on an excursion to the top of the volcano. Located in the middle of the Tyrrhenian Sea, north of the Sicilian coast, Stromboli is a small island dominated by one of the most active volcanoes in the world. Photo by   @bertiegregory   | A pack of gray wolves heads off across the frozen flats of the Hudson Bay coast, Canada. These particular wolves take on polar bears. They’re the only pack in the world known to do this. This pack was bold, but despite surrounding us just a few feet away, we felt zero aggressiveness, just curiosity. After briefly checking us out, they went on about their day.   #animals     #wolves     #wolf     #snow
